Visual field organization and retinal resolution of the beluga, Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas)

چکیده
The distribution and size of ganglion cells in the retina of three retinal wholemounts of beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) were investigated. Cell sizes were from 12 to 48 #m with monomodal size distribution. Ganglion cells concentrated at two spots of high density in the nasal and temporal quadrants, 50 to 60% from the optic disk. Both areas appeared as vertically elongated spots. The mean peak cell density over all wholemounts in the temporal and nasal areas was 400 and 300 cells/mm, respectively. With a posterior nodal distance of 12 m, these cell density corresponded to 17.4 cells/ deg and 12.7 cells/deg, which provided an underwater retinal resolution of 14.4& (2.2 cycle/deg) and 16.9& (1.8 cycle/deg) in the temporal and nasal highdensity areas, respectively, and aerial resolution of 19.2& (1.6 cycle/deg) and 22.5& (1.3 cycle/deg). These data suggest that the beluga whale has slightly poorer visual acuity than other marine odontocetes investigated so far.

Validation of Growth Layer Group (GLG) depositional rate using daily incremental growth lines in the dentin of beluga (Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas, 1776)) teeth
Counts of Growth Layer Groups (GLGs) in the dentin of marine mammal teeth are widely used as indicators of age. In most marine mammals, observations document that GLGs are deposited yearly, but in beluga whales, some studies have supported the view that two GLGs are deposited each year. Our understanding of beluga life-history differs substantially depending on assumptions regarding the timing ...

Beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) vocalizations and call classification from the eastern Beaufort Sea population.
Beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, have a graded call system; call types exist on a continuum making classification challenging. A description of vocalizations from the eastern Beaufort Sea beluga population during its spring migration are presented here, using both a non-parametric classification tree analysis (CART), and a Random Forest analysis. Twelve frequency and duration measurements ...
متن کاملGenome Sequence of an Alphaherpesvirus from a Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)
Beluga whale alphaherpesvirus 1 was isolated from a blowhole swab taken from a juvenile beluga whale. The genome is 144,144 bp in size and contains 86 putative genes. The virus groups phylogenetically with members of the genus Varicellovirus in subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae and is the first alphaherpesvirus sequenced from a marine mammal.
